How to Play Xbox Games on Your Phone (2026): Remote Play & Cloud Gaming

Yes, you can play Xbox games on your phone, and there are two official ways to do it. Remote Play streams from your own Xbox at home, for free. Cloud gaming streams from Microsoft's servers with Game Pass, so you don't need a console at all. This guide covers both, step by step.

TL;DR

  1. Pick your method: Remote Play (own console) or Cloud Gaming (Game Pass).
  2. Pair your Xbox Wireless Controller to your phone over Bluetooth.
  3. Open xbox.com/remoteplay or xbox.com/play in your phone's browser (or use the Xbox app).
  4. Get a stable connection: 5 GHz Wi-Fi is best.

Step 1: Pair your controller

  1. Turn on your Xbox Wireless Controller.
  2. Hold the pair button (top edge, by the USB port) until the Xbox button flashes quickly.
  3. On your phone, open Settings → Bluetooth and choose Xbox Wireless Controller.

Microsoft recommends the Xbox Wireless Controller over Bluetooth. Your phone needs Bluetooth 4.0 or later, which any recent phone has.

Step 2a: Remote Play from your own Xbox

On the console (once):

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features.
  3. Tick Enable remote features.
  4. Under Power options, choose Sleep. Microsoft is clear that remote play won't work in any other power mode.

On your phone: open a supported browser, go to xbox.com/remoteplay, sign in with the same Microsoft account and pick your console. You can also use the Xbox app.

Connection: Microsoft lists 7–10 Mbps, on 5 GHz Wi-Fi if possible (2.4 GHz works but isn't recommended). Cellular connections are supported too.

Step 2b: Cloud Gaming with Game Pass

  1. Make sure your Game Pass plan includes cloud gaming. (PC Game Pass and Game Pass for Console don't.)
  2. Go to xbox.com/play in a supported mobile browser, or open the Xbox app, and sign in.
  3. Pick a game with the cloud icon and press Play.

Good to know: Microsoft is moving Game Pass to a set number of cloud gaming hours each month, starting November 2026. xbox.com lists 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. Cloud gaming is only available in supported countries, and it doesn't support local (same-screen) multiplayer.

Step 3: Keep it smooth on the go

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi at home and a strong 5G/4G signal outside.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb so notifications don't pop over the game.
  • Keep a charger or power bank handy; streaming plus Bluetooth drains batteries quickly.
  • Get your phone off your lap. A controller mount puts the screen right above your thumbs, which is the difference between "it works" and "this is actually good".

The Game Armour Mobile Mount clamps onto Xbox Series X|S and Elite Series 2 controllers (and the PS5 DualSense) and holds phones up to 110 mm wide, with or without a case. It's geared metal rather than plastic teeth, spring-tensioned, and leaves every port open so you can charge while you play. Setup takes under 30 seconds.
